In 1942, Congress passed the US Flag Code which details exactly how the flag should be displayed and how citizens should behave around it. Most of the flag code is common sense but there are a few things that have been ignored through the years. I'll get to those in a moment. Briefly, I am a 49 year old white male who is a lifelong Democrat although I'm moving toward toward the Progressive branch lately for a number of reasons. Something that has bothered me for a long time is that the right has basically stolen the flag. When you see a flag on the pickup, you do not assume that person is a Democrat. When you see a guy in a flag t-shirt? Not a democrat. Even in my neighborhood when I see a house displaying the flag, I assume it's a Republican. I hate that. I don't know how it happened, but it did. Whatever.
So here are a couple things against the United States Flag Code:
1. Displaying the flag horizontally.
This photo was taken at a pro football game. The same league that has banned kneeling for the anthem. The same league that blackballed Colin Kaepernick for his political stances violates the US Flag Code all the time. For more on this, read this article.
2. Wearing it as a costume or athletic uniform.
Nobody would ever do that though. Especially Tammy Lahren, Fox "News" commentator. The right honors the flag always!
So being as today is July 4th, I weighed whether or not to fly my flag in front of my house. I usually do. But I decided that I won't this year or any other year until this country does better. I will not display my flag until Trump is out of office. Until children are reunited with their parents. Until republican senators stop meeting with Russian politicians who interfered in our elections in the name of improving relations. Until this unpatriotic war on America and our founding principles is vanquished.
Has our country ever been perfect? Not even close. This country has treated people of color horribly. It has treated women like second-class citizens. It has treated any group besides white men unfairly. But I feel like there had been progress until now. I liked Obama but his handling of education was ridiculous and we're still feeling the effects. He also killed WAY TOO MANY people around the world. #drones The Bushes? They were bad news. Clinton? War on drugs fail and high sleaze factor. Reagan? Please. Trickle down economics? Ummm... No. But I didn't feel like any of them were doing nearly the amount of damage to my country that this administration has done/is doing.
My flag remains folded and I feel like a patriot.
